Cutting Carbon and Boosting Efficiency at St George’s Hospital

Environmental Monitoring at St George’s Hospital, London – A Smart Sustainability Initiative
St George’s Hospital in Tooting, London, has implemented a cutting-edge environmental monitoring system to:
With support from NHS sustainability funding, the hospital partnered with IAconnects to integrate smart IoT sensors and upgrade its building management system (BMS).
The Aim:Optimising Energy Consumption
To optimise energy consumption, reduce operating theatre emissions, and support long-term healthcare sustainability and ESG goals.
The Challenge:Reducing carbon emissions in operating theatres
Operating theatres are among the largest energy consumers in hospitals.
Globally, healthcare services account for 4-5% of total carbon emissions.

Surgery is particularly carbon-intensive—each procedure can generate a carbon footprint equivalent to a petrol car driving from London to Edinburgh.
This makes the environmental conditions in operating theatres critical not only to the clinical process but also to a hospital’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.
The team at St George’s Hospital aimed to:

LoRaWAN sensors and smart infrastructure
IAconnects brought together domain experts to carry out 6–12 months of investigative work, identifying areas for optimisation.
The solution involved deploying over 500 wired and wireless sensing devices using the Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) protocol to cover data gaps.
Key features of the solution:

What they said
What they Said“The team at IAconnects Technology have become trusted advisors and suppliers in support of the St George’s Hospital Digital Roadmap. IAconnects’ approach is always pragmatic and, at every step, considers the bigger picture.”
David Roskams, BYFH Lead for Digital Transformation, Estates and Facilities Division, St George’s Hospital.
“St George’s needed a solution that would integrate with the existing BMS and fill any gaps in environmental data. Our approach was to deploy over 500 wired and wireless sensing devices using LoRaWAN technology to monitor key environmental metrics.”
Dave Lister, Healthcare Solutions Specialist, IAconnects.
