Surgery is particularly carbon-intensive—each procedure can generate a carbon footprint equivalent to a petrol car driving from London to Edinburgh.

This makes the environmental conditions in operating theatres critical not only to the clinical process but also to a hospital’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

The team at St George’s Hospital aimed to:

  • Capture comprehensive data from 31 operating theatres
  • Extract environmental monitoring data from legacy systems
  • Install additional control and remote sensing devices where needed
  • Ensure integration with the existing BMS

The Solution:

LoRaWAN sensors and smart infrastructure

IAconnects brought together domain experts to carry out 6–12 months of investigative work, identifying areas for optimisation.

The solution involved deploying over 500 wired and wireless sensing devices using the Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) protocol to cover data gaps.

  • Integration with over 250 data points from the BMS
  • Monitoring of temperature, humidity, CO2, TVOC, illuminance (Lux), air quality, pressure, and air change rates
  • Custom interfaces for different stakeholder roles, e.g., sustainability vs. ESG managers
  • Automated fault reporting directly into the Computer-Aided Facility Management (CAFM) system
